Falling is Part of the Process

When you fall short of achieving your goal, it is often called failing. Maybe you didn’t get the client, didn’t pass the class, or didn’t close the deal. Losers see failing as final, but failing isn’t final unless you fail to get up. Success is a process that you cannot talk out; you must walk it out. Every baby falls while learning to walk. Winners understand that failing is as much a part of the process of success as falling is part of the process of learning to walk. Winners see failure as a guide helping to identify the right paths to their destination. They take the lessons from failure, use them to better prepare, then go right out and put what they have learned to work.

Winners see losing as an external event. Losers see it as an internal condition. Winners fail more than losers, because they keep asking and reaching for their goals long after losers have quit trying. Winners fail faster than losers because, while the loser is wallowing in self-pity over an unopened door, the winner has knocked on several doors. Because winners have decided that success is the only option, they doggedly continue toward the goal. Their decision to succeed allows every fall to serve as a stepping-stone, a lamp that illuminates their path to the top.
